What does it mean that Jesus Christ is Lord?
Generally speaking, a lord is someone with authority, control, or power over others; to say that someone is “lord” is to consider that person a master or ruler of some kind.
Who is Lord of your life today?
When I was a new believer I had an old 1978 Ford pickup and I had a huge JESUS is LORD sticker across the back. My friends who knew me as a self-centered drug addict were all saying, “He’s Turned into a Jesus Freak” I was a new believer and really had surrendered my life to the Lord and I Believed that Jesus was Lord of my life. But that was seriously challenged when I took my truck down the shore for a week to get away for a while. It all sounded and looked good until I found myself all alone in my friend’s rental house. I started to feel lonely and the passions and desires of my sinful nature began to surface. I tried my best to manage my sin and temptation. But it wasn’t long before I took the Jesus is Lord sticker off the back of my truck and drove to an establishment where I could indulge in my inner passions and lusts.
You see Jesus was Lord on the back window of my truck and on Sunday morning but in that moment He wasn’t in my heart. I decided to take my life back in my own hands and indulge in my lustful desires and patterns of my past life. Even though I professed that Jesus was Lord of my life in that moment I was not living it out. Often that which is Lord of our life is the secret sin we hide in your heart. It’s what we worship when no one is watching. It’s easy to say I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord but to live it out 24 hours a day seven days a week in our public and private world is where the rubber meets the road.
That incident happened over 23 years ago. I wish I could tell you that I never took the reigns of my life back in my hands again but that would be a lie. The issue of Lordship is central to our relationship with God. Though at times we may deceive ourselves into thinking that we are truly free when we are in control the truth is that it’s only when HE is reigning on throne of our hearts as Lord – that we experience true freedom.
Here is where it gets personal. We may have the correct doctrine but if He does not have us it is for nothing. And authentic believer not only says I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son but follows that up with OUR LORD! Yes, I Believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, my Lord. He is not only Jesus as messiah, the anointed savior of the world, He is not only God’s only Son, He is my Lord. And the reality of how that is reflected is in my obedience and absolute alliance to Him.
When we say that we believe that Jesus Christ is our Lord we are saying that He has all authority, control and power over our lives. It means that we have given Him the reigns to our life. As it says in Romans 12:1, we have offered ourselves as a living sacrifice unto God. We are declaring that 24 hours a day seven days a week every aspect of our life belongs to Him.
We have basically transferred the title of our life over to Jesus. He owns us. We belong to Him. Yet my friends all too often we confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord on Sunday morning or when we are in the company of believers but do not live it out in our private world. In the book of Luke, Jesus speaks these convicting words….
“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete. (Luke 6:46-49)
The one who calls him Lord, Lord and puts into practice what he says is the one who can proclaim with integrity: I BELIEVE in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, and our Lord!!!
Though I had sinned, as soon as I turned back to God he restored cleansed of my sin and reestablished my heart and mind in Him. Maybe like me you have wandered away from Jesus and find yourself in need. Jesus says to you this morning come. Come unto me all you who are weary and heavily laden and I will give you rest. Come out of the guilt and shame of your sin and come to Jesus. Let Him cleanse you and give you a fresh start to today. Allow Him once again to take His place as LORD of your heart and mind.
